In this credit card review, I’ll be talking about the Chase Ink Business Preferred card. This is the only card in the Chase Ink lineup that has a $95 annual fee.
So is it worth it?
Let’s run through this card against other cards in the lineup, compare it against some cards I’ve used, and come up with a final score for this card.
Review Of Chase Ink Business Preferred Bonus Points
This card gives you 100K bonus points if you spend $15K in the first 3 months. That’s huge!
Other cards in the Chase Business credit card lineup only gives you up to $750 cash back (75K points).
In fact, this card has even more sign-on bonus points than its much more expensive competitor, the Amex Gold Business credit card. The Amex Gold Business just gives you 70-80K bonus points if you spend $10K after the first 3 months of card membership.
The sign on bonus points for this card is superb and I haven’t seen many cards give 6-figure bonuses in general, let alone business credit cards (where spending is already normally quite high).
Chase Ink Business Preferred Bonus Categories
You get 3X points per $1, for the first $150K spent on:
- Shipping purchases
- Internet/cable/phone service
- Advertising
- Travel
Shipping Purchases
Shipping purchases is a great way to get 3X points if your business has a lot of shipping expenses.
However, I’ve found that even though I’m in e-commerce and I ship a lot of product out, this isn’t something that’s practical for me.
As an example, I pay 3PL warehouses to ship things for me and those payments don’t count as “shipping purchases.” Likewise, even if I flip Pokemon cards, I normally print the labels off eBay as they have significant shipping discounts. Because I’m paying eBay, those don’t count as shipping purchases either. So I don’t find this category to be that practical.
So my review of this category for the Chase Ink Business Preferred: 2/10.
Internet/Cable/Phone Services
This is an easy 0/10.
The reason’s because with Chase Ink Business Cash (the free version of this card), you get 5X points in the same category.
And Chase Ink Business Cash is FREE.
Seems like a dumb idea to pay $95/yr for a card that gives you fewer points than a free card.
Review For The Advertising On The Chase Ink Business Preferred
This is where this card starts shining.
3X on advertising is quite sweet. If you run a ton of Facebook or Google ads, you can easily run up a 4-5 figure bill each month for a more mature business. This equates to 30000+ points a month just going about your business. This is the biggest perk of this card.
Compare this to Amex Gold’s 4X on the same category. You might think this card seems weak in comparison and of course we’d all prefer 4X over 3X points on advertising. But I’d say it depends on where your business is.
Example: Amex Gold card gives you an extra point per $1 spent in advertising. This means you’d need to spend $20-$30K USD more in advertising before you can even catch to the Chase Ink Business Preferred card’s sign-on bonus. Depending on your business and your spending patterns, this might end up as a superior card when compared to Amex Gold.
Lastly, keep in mind that Amex Gold is $295/yr, which means it’s $200/yr (20K points a year) more expensive.
Overall, I think the Chase Ink Business Preferred’s advertising bonuses are quite relevant to most businesses. 9/10.
Travel Points
3X on travel is simply put, amazing. The only other card that currently does this is the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which is a very expensive card ($550/yr).
Having this is quite great if you need to do a lot of traveling for business. And as long as you don’t commingle funds, this is a great alternative to Sapphire Reserve if you just wanted the card for this perk.
In my experience: travel on Chase is super flexible: it can mean anything from a plane ride, hotel stay, an Uber ride, to a metro ticket.
Let’s compare it to some other cards. The Amex Gold gives you 4X on travel, but it’s quite restricted as it’s only for airlines.
Another card you might compare this to is the Reserve or the Preferred, which are now giving 5X-10X points on travel. However, these 5-10X points have the restriction that they must be booked through the Chase platform, which may be overpriced.
So as far as getting 3X points on travel – without any restrictions – I only know 2 cards that do this: this card for $95/yr and the Sapphire Reserve at $550/yr.
OK, the JP Morgan Reserve Card does this too. But if you are eligible for the card, you probably don’t need to read this blog.
Overall, I rate this card’s travel category: 10/10.
Overall Thoughts
This is an amazing card.
It’s got very generous points on travel, and it’s quite competitive for in its advertising points.
Plus, its current sign-on bonus of 100K points just blow all the other business credit cards (that I know of) out of the water currently.
There’s some features that I don’t find useful, like 3X points on shipping purchases or the 3X points on internet/cable/phone. Though those are the only blemishes with this card.
Overall, I think this card is hugely relevant to most businesses since a regular business would likely spend a ton of on advertising and travel – and they’ll get 3X points on all this heavy spending. This card’s relevancy on top of its insane sign-on bonus far outweighs the tiny blemishes that this card has.
And to be honest, if you wanted 5X points for internet/cable/phone, just apply for the Chase Ink Business Cash and only use the free card for recurring telecommunication payments.
In summary, I highly recommend this card and I’d give it a final score of 8/10. Grab it here.
PS: If you sign up for the card through my links, I think I get some bonus points from your signup.
